Dear brothers and sisters,
Assalam Alaikum WaRehmatAllah Wabarakatuh,
Today I would like to share few Hadiths and verse from the Qur'an related to alcohol. Drinking Alcohol is strictly forbidden in Islam. Anybody dealing with alcohol business is earning haram money. Besides drinking, serving alcohol, transporting, carrying, etc are sin and the person is cursed. There is no single disagreement between any of the scholars regarding prohibition of Alcohol. Likewise, if we go to any society, however open it is, you will find a lot of social evils happening due to consumption of Alcohol. There are a great number of accidents reported every year due to drunken driving. Drinking is the cause between various family disputes, and this count is almost endless, name a social evil, and you will somehow managed to find its link with disobedience to Allah.

And obey Allah and the Messenger (Muhammad), and beware (of even coming near to drinking or gambling or Al-Ansaab, or Al-Azlaam) and fear Allah. Then if you turn away, you should know that it is Our Messenger’s duty to convey (the Message) in the clearest way” [al-Maa'idah 5:90-92]
It was narrated that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Every intoxicant is liquor and every liquor is haraam.” (Narrated by Muslim, al-Ashribah 3735)
It was narrated from Jaabir that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Allah has made a covenant to those who drink alcohol, that He will make them drink teenat al-khabaal.” They said, “O Messenger of Allah, what is teenat al-khabaal?” He said, “The sweat of the people of Hell,” or, “The juice of the people of Hell.” (Narrated by Muslim, al-Ashribah, 3732)
The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Whoever drinks alcohol and gets drunk, his prayer will not be accepted for forty days and if he dies he will go to Hell. But if he repents, Allah will accept his repentance. If he again drinks alcohol and gets drunk, his prayer will not be accepted for forty days and if he dies he will go to Hell. But if he repents, Allah will accept his repentance. If he again drinks alcohol and gets drunk, his prayer will not be accepted for forty days and if he dies he will go to Hell. But if he repents, Allah will accept his repentance. If he commits (this sin) again, then Allah pledges to make him drink the mud of khabaal on the Day of Resurrection.” They asked, “O Messenger of Allah, what is the mud of khabaal?” He said, “The juices of the people of Hell.”
The fact that his prayers are not accepted does not mean that they are not valid, or that he should give up praying, rather it means that he will not be rewarded for them.
So the benefit of praying will be that he will be discharged from his duty and will not be punished for not doing it.
Now another question arises, can we sit in the company of people who drink alcohol. Answer to this is also present in Qur'an and authentic narrations:
“You (true believers in Islamic Monotheism, and real followers of Prophet Muhammad and his Sunnah) are the best of peoples ever raised up for mankind; you enjoin Al-Ma‘roof (i.e. Islamic Monotheism and all that Islam has ordained) and forbid Al-Munkar (polytheism, disbelief and all that Islam has forbidden), and you believe in Allah”
[Aal ‘Imraan 3:110]
Ask question with yourself, what if you have the only person in the gathering which doesn't drink alcohol, or you are the only muslim, so what? Does these people, will save yourself from Hell-fire? When Allah says, stay away from the places where evil is committed, what make you disobey Allah's commandment?? Just for the pleasure of few friends, or may be your company boss?? Are you willing to share some part of hell-fire with your boss or your friends?? Hell-fire is no joke. It is intense, and scary. What a pity on a person who even knowing the correct path deliberately opting to enter the Hell-fire..
Our duty as a muslim is to stop them from doing evil, and enjoin them towards good. Are we really doing this job seriously?? We may get some good business deal, or some profit by staying with such people, but by doing so we are trading it off with our Akhirah (Hereafter). Remember this worldly life can end anytime, but the Hereafter is eternal. Disobeying Allah for a life, whose even few seconds are not guaranteed. And putting on a stake, a life which is eternal. Which sane person will even think of committing such a blunder?
Allah says (interpretation of the meaning):
“And it has already been revealed to you in the Book (this Qur’aan) that when you hear the Verses of Allah being denied and mocked at, then sit not with them, until they engage in a talk other than that; (but if you stayed with them) certainly in that case you would be like them” [al-Nisa’ 4:140]
“And when you (Muhammad) see those who engage in a false conversation about Our Verses (of the Qur’aan) by mocking at them, stay away from them till they turn to another topic. And if Shaytaan (Satan) causes you to forget, then after the remembrance sit not you in the company of those people who are the Zaalimoon (polytheists and wrongdoers)” [al-An’aam 6:68]
The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Whoever among you sees an evil action, let him change it with his hand (by taking action); if he cannot, then with his tongue (by speaking out); if he cannot, then with his heart (by hating it and feeling that it is wrong), and that is the weakest of faith.” Narrated by Muslim, 70.
This denunciation of the heart refers to the stress and agitation that one feels in the presence of evil. This is an individual obligation upon all people in all situations, and they have no excuse for not doing this, because no one has any power over the heart. Staying in a place where evil is being committed goes against this required denunciation.
Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyah (may Allah have mercy on him) said:
The believer has to fear Allah with regard to His slaves, but their guidance is not his responsibility. This is what is meant by the verse in which Allah says (interpretation of the meaning):
“O you who believe! Take care of your ownselves. If you follow the (right) guidance [and enjoin what is right (Islamic Monotheism and all that Islam orders one to do) and forbid what is wrong (polytheism, disbelief and all that Islam has forbidden)] no hurt can come to you from those who are in error”
[al-Maa’idah 5:105]
Following right guidance means doing all the obligatory duties. If a Muslim does his duty of enjoining what is good and forbidding what is evil, as well as other duties, the misguidance of those who are misguided will never harm him. This may be done sometimes with the heart, sometimes with the tongue, and sometimes with the hand. Denunciation with the heart is obligatory in every situation, because no harm can result from it, and whoever does not do that is not a Muslim, as the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “And that is the weakest of faith.”
Moreover the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) forbade sitting at a table where wine is being drunk.
It was narrated that ‘Umar ibn al-Khattaab (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, let him not sit at a table where wine is being drunk.”
Narrated by Ahmad, 126; classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Irwa’ al-Ghaleel, 7/6.
Finally we should remind ourselves of the words of Allah (interpretation of the meaning):
“And whosoever fears Allah and keeps his duty to Him, He will make a way for him to get out (from every difficulty).
And He will provide him from (sources) he never could imagine. And whosoever puts his trust in Allah, then He will suffice him. Verily, Allah will accomplish his purpose. Indeed Allah has set a measure for all things”
[al-Talaaq 65:2-3]
Dear brothers and sisters, purpose of sending this message is to remind ourselves of the evil of Alcohol, and dealing with it in any form. I know in this materialistic world, its very difficult to stay away from Alcohol. But, don't we agree that life is a test? And Allah test a person only on his capability, and He never overburden anyone. If we are facing a test, then successful completion of it will result in numerous rewards. So, we have to decide what we want. I know many people argue and come up with quote, that Allah forgives all sins. Verily, there is no single doubt about that. But just imagine, death overcome us, in middle of such a gathering?? Who will save us from Hell-fire then? Remember,Allah is extremely just too. By blatanly violating His commandments and sitting in the company of people drinking alcohol or doing other evil(violating verses of Qur'an), are we really acting as an obedient servant?
May Allah make us steadfast in religion. Ameen..
JazakumAllah Khayran
