Music : Food for the Soul????

Assalam Alaikum WaRehmatAllah Wabarakatuh,

I would like to share some information with you all, regarding music. I found a number of scholars arguing over prohibition of music. But if you see verdict from majority of good scholars, they almost all agreed upon that music is haram, except tambourines (simple daff, and not the one with rings around it). There is one golden rule which I generally follow, if majority of muslim scholars are agreeing over something, then I prefer to follow it. Instead of looking out for one scholar in a hundred, who give totally different view. Stay away from doing such thing, as its a matter of religion, matter of heaven and hell, we can't take it casually.

The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said: “Adhere to the majority.” And whoever dies differing from the majority, dies as a jaahili. (Tafseer al-Qurtubi, 14/56)

Recently, I was talking with a polytheist, after few hours of discussion, he agreed upon that God is one, but he ended the discussion with this quote, "If hell is my destiny, then I can't do anything about it. I will say sorry to God, and He will surely forgives me". He was denying the arguments, he was rejecting the clear evidences, and also the fact that majority of people who studied his religion, disagreed upon the concept he is following. And that time I realized, that he was acting like many of my muslim brothers and sisters, who are following wrong practices, and are stubborn enough not to open their mind, and discuss it with impartial viewpoint.. This life is too short, as compared to the life of hereafter, take some time out and see things around you which are haraam, or doubtful, gain some knowledge, and throw it out of your life, and help others too.. Well, that is my simple suggestion, now lets quickly look into the music issue.

All the musical instruments like wind (flute), brass (trumpet), string (banjo, guitar, piano, violin) and percussion (drum, Xylophone) are forbidden. Except the tambourines (daff), as I stated above. Now, you all might be curious about the source of this information. Lets look into the details about the ruling on music.

“And of mankind is he who purchases idle talks (i.e. music, singing) to mislead (men) from the path of Allah…” [Luqmaan 31:6]

The scholar of the ummah, Ibn ‘Abbaas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: this means singing. Mujaahid (may Allah have mercy on him) said: this means playing the drum (tabl). (Tafseer al-Tabari, 21/40).

Al-Hasan al-Basri (may Allah have mercy on him) said: this aayah was revealed concerning singing and musical instruments (lit. woodwind instruments). (Tafseer Ibn Katheer, 3/451).

The way in which music blocks people from the Qur’aan is worse than the way in which other kinds of false talk block them, because people are naturally inclined towards it and tend to want to listen to it. The aayaat condemn replacing the Qur’aan with idle talk in order to mislead (men) from the path of Allah without knowledge and taking it as a joke, because when an aayah of the Qur’aan is recited to such a person, he turns his back as if he heard them not, as if there were deafness in his ear. If he hears anything of it, he makes fun of it. All of this happens only in the case of the people who are most stubbornly kaafirs and if some of it happens to singers and those who listen to them, they both have a share of this blame. (Ighaathat al-Lahfaan, 1/258-259).

“[Allah said to Iblees:] And befool them gradually those whom you can among them with your voice (i.e. songs, music, and any other call for Allah’s disobedience)…” [al-Israa’ 17:64]

It was narrated that Mujaahid (may Allah have mercy on him) said: “And befool them gradually those whom you can among them with your voice” – his voice [the voice of Iblees/Shaytaan] is singing and falsehood. Ibn al-Qayyim (may Allah have mercy on him) said: This idaafah [possessive or genitive construction, i.e., your voice] serves to make the meaning specific, as with the phrases [translated as] “your cavalry” and “your infantry” [later in the same aayah]. Everyone who speaks in any way that is not obedient to Allah, everyone who blows into a flute or other woodwind instrument, or who plays any haraam kind of drum, this is the voice of the Shaytaan. Everyone who walks to commit some act of disobedience towards Allah is part of his [the Shaytaan’s] infantry, and anyone who rides to commit sin is part of his cavalry. This is the view of the Salaf, as Ibn ‘Abi Haatim narrated from Ibn ‘Abbaas: his infantry is everyone who walks to disobey Allah. (Ighaathat al-Lahfaan).


“Do you then wonder at this recitation (the Qur’aan)? And you laugh at it and weep not, Wasting your (precious) lifetime in pastime and amusements (singing)” [al-Najm 53:59-61]

‘Ikrimah (may Allah have mercy on him) said: it was narrated from Ibn ‘Abbaas that al-sumood [verbal noun from saamidoon, translated here as “Wasting your (precious) lifetime in pastime and amusements (singing)”] means “singing”, in the dialect of Himyar; it might be said “Ismidi lanaa” [‘sing for us’ – from the same root as saamidoon/sumood] meaning “ghaniy” [sing]. And he said (may Allah have mercy on him): When they [the kuffaar] heard the Qur’aan, they would sing, then this aayah was revealed.

The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said:
“Among my ummah there will certainly be people who permit zinaa, silk, alcohol and musical instruments…” (Narrated by al-Bukhaari)

This hadeeth indicates in two ways that musical instruments and enjoyment of listening to music are haraam. The first is the fact that the Prophet (PBUH) said: “[they] permit” which clearly indicates that the things mentioned, including musical instruments, are haraam according to sharee’ah, but those people will permit them. The second is the fact that musical instruments are mentioned alongside things which are definitely known to be haraam, i.e., zinaa and alcohol: if they (musical instruments) were not haraam, why would they be mentioned alongside these things?

Only exception to musical instrument is daff, and there are few hadiths which supported this view:

It was narrated from ‘Aa’ishah that Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) entered her house and there were two girls with her during the days of Mina beating the daff, and the Prophet (PBUH) was covering himself with his garment. Abu Bakr rebuked them, and the Prophet uncovered his face and said, “Leave them alone, O Abu Bakr, for these are the days of Eid.” That was during the days of Mina.
(Al-Bukhaari, 944)

It was narrated that al-Rubayyi’ bint Mu’awwidh ibn ‘Afra’ said: “After the consummation of my marriage, the Prophet (PBUH) came and sat on my bed as far from me as you are sitting now, and our little girls started beating the daff and reciting verses mourning my father, who had been killed in the battle of Badr. One of them said, ‘Among us is a Prophet who knows what will happen tomorrow.’ On that the Prophet said, ‘Omit this (saying) and keep on saying the verses which you had been saying before.’”
(Al-Bukhaari, 4852).

It was narrated that Buraydah said: The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) went out on one of his military campaigns, and when he came back, a black slave woman came and said, “O Messenger of Allah, I vowed that if Allah brought you back safe and sound, I would beat the daff before you and sing. The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said, “If you vowed that, then do it, otherwise do not do it.’”
(Al-Tirmidhi, 3690)

So, dear brothers and sisters, please avoid listening to music. Its forbidden to listen to music as I provided the above reference on that. There are a lot of pop singers coming and trying to spread Islam, through "haraam" means. Yes, this is the key-point, spreading halaal through haraam. Does it makes sense??? I don't know about their intention, only Allah knows best what is hidden in the hearts. Only thing I can do is to strive in the way of Islam, and inform my brothers and sisters about that. I can't force anyone, to follow what I say. If someone has a different opinion about musical instruments, then please ask him/her to provide substantial evidence to refute the above references. Don't just follow other's opinions.
